KO:MI’s third album Belonging in Nature will be released on January 31, 2025. Belonging in Nature is a concept album based on Sanna Komi’s doctoral research, in which she examines the societal challenges of wolf conservation from a political ecology perspective, especially through the lens of power structures. Musically, the album is an ambitious and skillful work in its own right. The album is produced by the acclaimed Lau Nau. Its goal is to expand the understanding of what experimental, genre-defying (pop) music can be.
Belonging in Nature explores the human relationship with the environment through the complex and often conflicting coexistence between humans and wolves, using elements of experimental contemporary classical music, art pop, and field recordings. “I believe in music’s unique ability to connect directly with our emotions and intuitive understanding of the world as a non-verbal and non-visual medium,” Komi summarizes.
KO:MI is the solo project of musician and multi-instrumentalist Sanna Komi, who has played in numerous indie bands. KO:MI’s music is cinematic and emotionally evocative. She cites Anna Meredith, Philip Glass, and similar contemporary composers as her musical influences. She is known from several Finnish indie bands, including Pintandwefall and Taikayö Camping.
