In 1994, ten years after coming together, theatrical and musical group Motelli Skronkle released their third and last album prior to a hiatus of twenty-two years. Upon its release, the album, Koi, was not met with much hype outside a disparate selection of devotees who had previously witnessed the exuding presence of the group either live or on record, and were left in awe, permanently. Few bands succeed in committing on record the defiant fragility of a charisma-oozing presence to the degree Motelli Skronkle did on Koi. The album brings together a versatile blend of unexpected, yet prosaic, worlds where vocal cords transmute into arcane synthesizers and the band itself becomes the pivotal instrument of nonconformist revolt.
Today, this classic piece of Finnish underground sounds as innovative as ever, skyrocketing mesmerized marching band aesthetics to a Gong-esque orbit while blasting dirty deep dub of Black Ark era Lee “Scratch” Perry at full force from the speakers.
Ektro Records will release Motelli Skronkle’s Koi for the first time on vinyl in April, 2020.
